No To Tribalism

As much as we like to smile and greet each other, there’s always that something about not being the same tribe. Face it, it’s true, it still happens. Whether at work place, School, where you live, gym etc. Well there’s just that wall factor.

This other day I was in a taxi, going to school, I got the front seat, a guy was sitting next to me, outside was another guy, winking, blinking I don’t know, but he was smiling at me and trying to utter a few words in Sesotho, I “lol’ed”; so the taxi took off, the guy next to me asked “are you sotho”? And I answered “yes I am” and he was like “well I can see that guy is tryna charm ya, …….so is it true that you guys don’t date Xhosas”? lol why that question anyway, that’s tribalist, I gave him that puzzled look but anyway I didn’t mind and I answered again “yes we do”.

But I kept wondering though, lol, why had the rumour started in the first place, if its not true…agh, never mind that.

In my first year, no offense, I noticed, and I still do, most tswana guys have got dreadlocks, anyhooo id notice that a group of guys will all be speaking the same language, and you would notice they are not multi cultural, the are the same tribe and they are all friends, but Jesus this is south Africa and we are diverse, I’m still surprised there are people who still prefer to have “certain friends” as friends.

This other time my friend tell me she walked in at the ladies room, and there were a group of Zulu speaking girls, all Zulu speaking and she was like ok “ i wasn’t surprised by the fact that they all spoke Zulu, mind me,I was just surprised to hear zulu speaking girls studying at a tertiary institution in Caoe Town nogal, you know coz they say it’s a xhosa territory, well now the Zille territory lol” but honest truth, you find many Zulu’s studying in places like JHB, Durbs, etc, but where Xhosas are dominating….never! Now those people just don’t get along, god knows why.

Look at the fact that Zulu taxi drivers only speak zulu at the JHB taxi rank,i mean that place is diverse, all cultures are there, and you’d find that everyone understands one another…well hayi Zulu taxi drivers. It has even become a joke now, stereotype if you may call it that. But those dudes just don’t negotiate, finish and klaar!

As for Sotho’s residing in Cape Town, lol most of them like to gossip thinking that some people do not hear them, I’m not criticising, I’m one of them, but it’s the truth hey.

So this other source of mine, tells me a personal experience with a Venda guy, well she says they had a “fling”, she told it like this: “well we were “doing it” or about t anyway, so the dude grabbed a condom all on his own, without a request from me lol, I was stunned and impressed at the same time, coz u know how guys usually are, they like to wait for you to say hey!, so he saw the reaction on my face, you know the impressed look, and he was like “ look lady, don’t be surprised, I don’t want a xhosa baby” so I got maaaad, I got up, its not like I wanted the Venda baby anyway, but that was just rude bro! rude and tribalist…

We are all brothers and sisters all born under the African sun, form Africa’s soil, why do we still discriminate against each other, if it’s not racism, its tribalism or xenophobia, sexism, homophobic, the list goes on. We are all different but we should learn to embrace and accept one another for who we are, 1994 was the year of Democracy, we can date, marry whomever we choose, but yet we still pinpoint and classify each other by our races, cultures and sexuality.

Well I don’t know why that still happens, and you probably don’t know too, but its up to us to change that, you know as they say when saving water “every drop counts”. Well we can do the same, “every change of mindset will make a difference”.

Happy Birthday Structure

It was Friday the 2^nd of March 2012, when myself you and Luzuko gathered at McDonalds in town for no apparent reasons, I guess it was one of our bonding sessions. We laughed and joked together, the usual old thing that we used to do all the time. I remember I suggested that the structures upgrade their cell phones and you went like “Dude, stop bitching about cell phones, we have bigger problems than that, like buying cars hey”. I had no choice but to laugh and you laughed along and we enjoyed ourselves, little did we know that it was our last meeting. I am not too sure why, but I asked you to come with us to class and for some reason you refused, it was probably because you had a feeling that the gate was already opened and all that was left was for you to walk in, I know in a different day you would have came with us. It took me a very long time to believe that you had really left, but after a very emotional memorial service, I started putting things into perspective but that doesn’t mean I stopped hurting, to this day I am still hurting everytime I think of the memories.

If my memory serves me well, in your 22^nd birthday, we were at the E.Learning and I remember Luzuko bought a Gatsby for lunch and you went on like, guys this is so unstructural, why we are eating a Gatsby? this is so not cool man and again we laughed about it. We asked how old were you and as usual the least expected answer came “I am 22 dude, I am young and relevant” oh man, so many memories. A year later from that day, we have to say happy birthday and you are not here, you are not with us, but what can we do, we have to carry on with life.

On your 23^rd Birthday, I would love to offer my sincere gratitude for all the memories you left behind, the time you spent with me on earth, for every moment that you made me laugh and all the knowledge you shared with me at Varsity, I really thank you Thembisile. I hope the angels are treating you well wherever you are! Till we meet again………….Goodbye My Friend!

Memoirs of a Young Hustler

We were a brand, we were hot like that, we were a trademark by the name of “Thee Structures” but now we aint a brand anymore, we lost our ‘R’ that made the brand complete, we r just a band now, the empty space you have left is strongly felt, the pain that we feel, aint no medicine for it, I’d give up myself for you, just for you to be back, we were suppose to rise n shine together young hustler, we had some good times together, the fun n happiness we shared, the achievements we had with you, I bow to god thanking him for the opportunity of having you in our lives, even if it was only two years, it sure feels like a lifetime structure, we were more than just a brand. We were the Structures, we were a trademark yeeaah man!!. I promise you one day we gonna show you what we made of ourselves, we gonna live for you, we gonna make you proud.

Today I passed by Civic Centre, it was a coincidence I guess, because today is your birthday, today would’ve been your birthday...as I walked, I looked at the spot I last saw u, the spot where I had hugged you n bid goodbye…only that I didn’t know it was the last day seeing you, u were wearing your favourite jacket, that grey hoodies you loved so much, I loved it too. My heart breaks thinking about those things, can’t stop the tears from falling, will the pain ever end. I doubt.

The world has lost a legend, to us u were, you were taken from us so soon, in such a painful way. We will never forget you, not in a million years, you gonna keep shinning till the end of time, love you always…

Previous Article Explained

Following some unbelievable outcry from all corners where my blog can be accessed, as humble a person as I am, and coming from a PR background myself, where I have been taught the importance of relationship building and maintenance, whether as an organisation or as an individual who wishes to build a good profile, I will take this opportunity and offer some clarity about my previous article titled “White citizens enjoy unfair advantage over their black fellow countrymen in SA”. It is of vital and paramount importance that I make it very clear that the article meant no harm or offence to any race group whatsoever. It was a mere expression of the situation in South Africa but unfortunately interpreted completely out of context. I would also like to bring to everyone’s attention that as an aspiring writer, one just has to be able to say things that not everybody can say but unfortunately in this situation I was wrongly interpreted.

The article was intended to highlight the impact of the political system that was in practice in South Africa for a very long time until the early 1990’s. We are all aware that power was distributed unequal for a very long period in our country and Apartheid was hugely in favour of the minority and the masses were left out in the cold while those who opposed the system were jailed and many brutally killed, but that is another story for another day. All I was expressing is that white citizens have a very solid foundation to build their lives on, which is not the case with black and coloured citizens. All that this means is, for a black person to start a business that will be as competitive as already existing companies is almost impossible because they have to start from scratch. They are not so fortunate that they have to take over from their parents or whatever the case may be, they have to start everything from the beginning.

With regards to some utterances made regarding Universities, the intention was to compare the two situations, a situation of a black student who grew up under extreme poverty conditions and a white student who had everything they needed to succeed in University. The difference between these two students is that they were brought up in two completely different circumstances, with one favoured by the then political system and the other not and neither of these students can shoulder responsibility for any of this.

It also needs to be understood that not every white person loved apartheid, it was imposed to all citizens by the government and nobody had a choice but to adhere to policies set out by the government. The apartheid government was against everyone who opposed the system whether black or white, we are all aware that people like Amhed Kathrada were jailed alongside Walter Sisulu and Former President Nelson Mandela regardless of colour or race. The point I am trying to make here is that, it would be wrong to blame the white society in its entirety for all events that took place back then. The intention of the article was not to blame white citizens but to expose consequences of the apartheid system which left races that were oppressed very poor and the finger was only pointed at the system not the beneficiaries.

I am very aware that all situations differ and that there are a lot of white citizens who worked really hard to be where they are today and I have also acknowledged this in my previous article and I am saying it again that those people really deserve a standing ovation as they contribute immensely to the economic development of this country. I would also like to reiterate that not every white citizen has inherited some wealth from their parents and that not all white University students have benefited from the apartheid system.

This blog is intended for everyone, it is therefore my primary intention to keep all those who take time to read it happy, for that reason, I humble myself to all those who took offence, there was none intended. In fact, I know a lot of white people whom I can call my friends, it would therefore be impossible for me to go all out to offend them, especially considering that I am one of the people who really intend to uphold all policies as set out in our constitution.
